The symptoms of pediatric otitis media include ear pain, fever, chills, bitter taste in the mouth, yellow or red urine, constipation, and reduced bowel movements, as well as a decrease in hearing. In some cases, the eardrum may perforate, leading to purulent discharge from the ear and a decrease in pain. Otitis media may also coexist with chronic mastoiditis. Antibiotic treatment can alleviate pain and inflammation. If the pain is severe, phenol ear drops can be used to relieve pain, but caution should be exercised as phenol may thicken the eardrum. It should be used sparingly, especially in children. If a child is unable to sleep due to pain, a small amount can be used under medical guidance.
