What Should You Do When an Epileptic Seizure Occurs?

If you notice any prodromal symptoms in a patient, quickly have them lie flat on the bed or on a flat surface nearby. During a major epileptic seizure, there is an increased amount of respiratory secretions, which can easily lead to respiratory obstruction or aspiration pneumonia. Turn the patient’s head to one side to allow the secretions to flow out naturally. Additionally, loosen the patient’s collar and buttons to keep the airways clear.
