The Role of Adenoids

Adenoids are a type of lymphoid tissue similar to tonsils, located at the back wall of the nasopharynx. They may swell and become inflamed due to infections during childhood, potentially leading to permanent hypertrophy. Adenoid hypertrophy can obstruct nasal breathing, affect sinus drainage, causing sinusitis, and block the auditory ossicles’ pathway, leading to middle ear infections. For children with adenoid hypertrophy or infections, surgery is often performed to remove them along with the tonsils.
