Is Newborn Toxic Erythema Severe?

A newborn has developed a severe case of toxic erythema. Most cases appear within 4 days after birth, with a few present at birth and the latest around 2 weeks. The skin shows red spots, papules, wheals, and pustules, with some initially having confluent erythema, followed by firm, erythematous 1-3mm pale yellow or white papules and pustules. They are scattered and occasionally confluent. They can occur on any part of the body except the palms and soles, but are more prone to develop on areas like the buttocks, back, and shoulders that are under pressure. The number of lesions can vary, and the skin changes can resolve within a few hours, reappearing soon after. Generally, there are no other systemic symptoms, and they heal spontaneously within 7-10 days without the need for specific treatment. It’s important to keep the skin clean and avoid scratching or irritation.
