Mild Mediterranean anemia does not require special treatment. Intermediate and severe forms should be treated with one or more of the following methods. The most common problem with Mediterranean anemia is that patients often suffer from heart, liver, and endocrine dysfunction. Patients with low-volume blood transfusions are less likely to have liver and endocrine problems because their lifespan is not long enough to cause such damage, while older patients who receive high-volume transfusions but do not receive sufficient iron supplements are more likely to encounter these issues.
