Question

How often should children have their eyes checked with mydriasis?

Answer

Mydriasis refraction is primarily used in the following situations: (1) Children under 12 years old, as they have a strong accommodative ability, and without mydriasis, the refraction error can be significant. (2) For myopia, hyperopia, or astigmatism patients aged 12 to 40, it is generally recommended to perform mydriasis during the first refraction. If the degree of change is not significant during the second refraction, small pupil refraction can be conducted based on the original degree and adjustments can be made. (3) For those with normal fundus and refractive media examination but poor vision, mydriasis refraction is needed to rule out refractive errors. (4) For more complex refractive errors, such as high myopia, high hyperopia, or high astigmatism, or when myopia and hyperopia are combined with astigmatism. (5) For adolescents with unstable vision, fluctuating between good and poor vision, suspected of being pseudo-myopic. Once mydriasis is performed, the accommodative effect disappears, and pseudo-myopia is also eliminated.
