Question

What causes newborn jaundice?

Answer

Your baby may be experiencing physiological jaundice. This type of jaundice is usually mild, appearing only on the face and neck, and sometimes spreading to other parts of the body, even the conjunctiva of the eyes. This condition typically appears within 2 to 3 days after birth and usually resolves on its own after about 5 to 6 days. For premature infants, the duration of jaundice may be longer, sometimes reaching 4 weeks. If the jaundice is severe, blue light therapy may be required.
