Question

Can a newborn with a minor inguinal hernia use the coin compression method for treatment?

Answer

For infant inguinal hernias, the coin compression method can be attempted to try and allow for spontaneous healing. Within the first year of a baby’s life, due to the development of abdominal muscles, some cases may naturally heal. When trying conservative treatment, the first step is to return the protruding hernial contents back into the abdominal cavity, then use a coin to press on the hernial sac. Secure the coin in place by wrapping a bandage or cloth around the abdomen from the back. Maintain this pressure for about a month to a month and a half until the inguinal hernia no longer protrudes. If it is found that the coin cannot be kept in position, or if treatment is ineffective, it is recommended to seek professional medical advice and further treatment.
