Question
What does it mean to be G6PD positive?
Answer
G6PD deficiency is one of the most common genetic enzyme deficiencies. The onset of G6PD deficiency is due to a mutation in the G6PD gene, which results in reduced enzyme activity. This leads to red blood cells being unable to withstand oxidative damage and being destroyed, causing hemolytic anemia. This condition is also known as favism because symptoms may be triggered in patients after consuming broad beans.
