Question
How is pediatric enema performed?
Answer
- Prepare the necessary items and bring them to the bedside, ensuring that both the patient and the environment are ready, similar to the preparation before a large-volume retention enema.
- Lubricate the rectal tube, connect the syringe to the rectal tube, expel any air bubbles, and clamp the tube. Insert the tube 7 to 10 cm deep, then release the clamp to allow the solution to flow in completely. After the enema is finished, inject 5 to 10 ml of warm water.
- Hold the rectal tube tightly and pull it out, instructing the patient to retain the enema fluid for 10 to 20 minutes before defecating.
