Question

Why do newborns cough milk out of their mouth and nose after drinking formula?

Answer

This is often due to baby regurgitation. Generally, after feeding, it’s recommended to hold the baby upright for a while before laying them down. Most of the milk in the nose is not a big issue; it can be expelled from the nostrils, and the milk in the nasopharynx can reflux into the mouth or throat. If there is still some residue, it can be gently wiped away using a cotton swab while the baby is asleep. To avoid this in the future, simply avoid placing the baby flat on their back immediately after feeding.
