Lumbar puncture (also known as a spinal tap) is performed to more accurately diagnose diseases such as meningitis and sepsis. The procedure involves piercing to extract cerebrospinal fluid. Post-operatively, complications such as brain herniation, nerve damage, bleeding, and infection may occur. However, with strict operation and postoperative care, these can generally be avoided.
