Question
Can 3D ultrasound detect Down syndrome?
Answer
The 3D ultrasound examination can help to view if the fetus has neural tube defects, but for a definitive diagnosis of Down syndrome, doctors usually recommend an amniocentesis test. Amniocentesis is a more accurate testing method that can determine whether the fetus has Down syndrome. Even if the Down syndrome screening results show a high risk, it does not mean the fetus necessarily has Down syndrome, as only about 1% of fetuses with high-risk results are confirmed to have the condition. However, for the health and future happiness of the fetus and the family, if the screening results show a high risk, it is recommended to undergo amniocentesis to determine the fetus’s health status.
