Question
When a child has a seizure, parents often feel overwhelmed and unsure of how to provide appropriate care.
Answer
When a child has a seizure, quickly turn them onto their back without using a pillow. Place a gauze-wrapped tongue depressor (or toothbrush handle) between the upper and lower teeth to prevent biting the tongue. Next, loosen the collar and tilt the head to one side to allow saliva to drain out, avoiding aspiration into the lungs. Also, lift the jaw to prevent choking. Do not force water or press on the limbs during the seizure. You can stimulate or press points such as the Hiccup, Yin Tang, Sanyinjiao, and Shuigou. Prevent excessive fatigue and stress, maintain regular sleep patterns, avoid overeating or undereating, avoid foods like chocolate and onions, and consume moderate amounts of sweets. In terms of diet, choose dairy products, cheese, vegetable oils, or moderate amounts of animal fats, animal offal, eggs, kelp, shrimp paste, anchovies, and fresh vegetables. Take precautions against colds and engage in appropriate exercise.
