Question
Is the baby’s recent occasional seizures and vomiting foams a sign of epilepsy?
Answer
- The symptoms you described are similar to the characteristics of an epilepsy seizure, but a Brain Electroencephalogram (EEG) examination is necessary for a definitive diagnosis.
- After confirmation, the cause should be analyzed. Hydrocephalus often accompanies epilepsy and is typically secondary epilepsy. However, it should be differentiated from diseases such as tuberculous meningitis, purulent meningitis sequelae, and brain developmental abnormalities. If the cause is treatable, the underlying disease should be treated.
- I’m not sure how many times your baby has had seizures. If there have been multiple episodes, then regardless of the cause, oral antiepileptic medication treatment is necessary. Before selecting medication, liver function tests, blood routine tests, blood ammonia levels, and urine routine tests should be checked, and an allergy history should be taken into consideration to prepare for medication selection.
- It is still unclear whether there is associated developmental delay, and whether rehabilitation treatment is needed also requires further assessment.
