Question
A 20-day-old newborn is experiencing cough and sputum. What could be the possible causes and treatment methods?
Answer
An ultrasound examination has revealed an abnormality in the newborn’s head. It is recommended to conduct further auscultation and perspective to confirm the cause, and if necessary, to perform an X-ray examination. For mild infections, oral anti-inflammatory medication can be administered; for cough or sputum, fresh bamboo decoction or pediatric honey cough granules can be taken. In case of severe infection, intravenous fluid therapy is suggested. Additionally, if suspected to be a mycoplasma infection, treatment with erythromycin injection or azithromycin dry suspension can be considered.
