Question

After pregnancy, how many ultrasound exams should be done in normal circumstances, and at what stages?

Answer

Generally, it is advisable for pregnant women to undergo four ultrasound exams during their pregnancy. These exams are scheduled at different stages: early pregnancy (after 6 weeks of amenorrhea), mid-pregnancy (around 16 weeks), mid-late pregnancy (around 28 weeks), and late pregnancy (from 36 weeks to before the due date). These exams help determine whether the intrauterine pregnancy is normal, understand the growth and development of the fetus, screen for any fetal malformations, and assess amniotic fluid volume, placental condition, fetal position, and predict the possibility of natural childbirth in the later stages. In case of special circumstances, it should be followed according to the doctor’s guidance to increase the number of exams.
