Question

Dear Baby, currently 6 years old, just started to say that her throat hurts, found that she also has a slight cough, and is accompanied by a low-grade fever. How should we treat pediatric tonsillitis for optimal effectiveness?

Answer

If a child has tonsillitis, first-line treatment can include symptomatic antibiotic medication, regional therapy such as tonsil crypt irrigation, or intra-tonsillar injections. Painkillers can be given for throat pain. For fever, select a cooling method based on body temperature; below 38.5°C, physical cooling can be applied; above 38.5°C, oral fever-reducing medication can be taken. In cases of repeated acute severe infections or complications, it is recommended to perform tonsillectomy two weeks after the acute inflammation subsides. During treatment, also pay attention to giving the child a light diet and nutritional supplements to aid in an early recovery.
