Question

Hello, my child is 8 years old and has adenoid hypertrophy, showing symptoms of excessive saliva and reduced memory. They have been treated at the Guiyang Medical College. What treatment recommendations do you have?

Answer

Adenoid hypertrophy may cause nasal congestion and snoring at night, and in severe cases, may require surgical treatment. However, several factors typically indicate that a child may improve symptoms through conservative treatment without immediate surgery: 1. The child is under 3 years old, 2. The duration of symptoms is less than 12 weeks, 3. Standardized medication treatment has not yet been received, 4. Symptoms of nasal congestion and snoring are intermittent. Therefore, I recommend that your child undergo a period of conservative treatment first. I suggest taking cefixime orally for a week, along with Nasalfron spray (once a day, one spray in each nostril, with the least side effects), and continue using these medications for another week if symptoms improve. Once the phlegm in the throat at night disappears, you can stop taking cefixime and continue using Nasalfron spray until two months. If there is no significant improvement in symptoms within two weeks, consider surgical treatment.
