Question
What should be considered when diagnosing intellectual disability? What are the pathological manifestations and symptoms of intellectual disability?
Answer
Children with intellectual disability experience delayed brain development and poor self-control, with most showing attention deficit issues. Some may also have ADHD, which is more common in males. The main symptoms include difficulty in maintaining focus on a single task, especially when requiring willpower; tendency to be distracted, with attention easily influenced by external disturbances; inability to sustain activities; and some intellectually disabled children find it challenging even to stay undistracted for 3 to 5 minutes. Children with accompanying hyperactive behavior may fidget in their chairs during class, struggle to sit still, talk excessively, and sometimes even disrupt other students’ learning.
