Questions

The patient developed the condition in January 2013 and received treatment. Most of the symptoms of facial palsy have recovered, but there is still a problem with facial muscle synergy. How should it be handled?

Answers

For severe facial muscle synergy issues, reconstructive surgery can be used to repair smiling movements; for milder cases, botulinum toxin injections can improve symptoms, but the dosage and injection location must be carefully controlled. Most patients need facial muscle training to restore a natural smile. However, a complete return to a normal facial appearance is almost impossible, as facial muscle synergy usually involves abnormal movement of multiple facial muscles. Reconstructive surgery can improve the static appearance, while botulinum toxin helps with the dynamic appearance, but its effect is reversible and generally returns within 5-6 months.
