If a neonate is infected with gastroenteritis, the treatment method should be based on the identified pathogen and the results of drug sensitivity tests to select the appropriate antibiotic. For Gram-negative bacillary infections, third-generation cephalosporins or amoxicillin/clavulanate potassium (Augmentin) can be considered. If the diarrhea is caused by a virus, antibiotics are not necessary. In cases of fungal enteritis, antibiotics should be discontinued and antifungal medication should be taken orally.
