Question

My baby is 7 months old and lives in the south. Their chin has developed cracks, which are very rough. The face isn’t as cracked. I’m not sure if it’s due to food dripping onto the chin and being exposed to the wind. I’ve observed that neighboring children don’t have this issue. I’ve tried applying some baby cream, but it hasn’t worked. Currently, I’m using Vaseline, but I’m not sure if it’s effective. I’m very worried and don’t know how to cure it. Please advise an expert.

Answer

Hello: Thank you for your trust in us! Based on your description, I suggest you follow these steps: 1. Prevent skin moisture evaporation by using an occlusive moisturizing method, which involves applying mineral oils like Vaseline to seal the skin, preventing moisture inside from evaporating. Products like Ponds Vaseline Moisturizing Cream use this principle, but the downside is that they can be too greasy and easily dirty. 2. Absorb moisture from the outside using an absorbent moisturizing method; these contain ingredients like glycerin, sorbitol, propylene glycol, and polyethylene glycol, which have water-absorbing properties and draw moisture from the atmosphere into the skin. Glycerin, for instance, has moisturizing properties but should not be used in its pure form as it can draw moisture out of the skin; it should be mixed at a ratio of 1:3. Typically, formulas include 10% to 15% glycerin, which is both moisturizing and absorbs water. 3. Combine hygroscopic moisturizing with hydration to form a network structure that turns free water into bound water. These include collagen, elastin, hyaluronic acid, and more. 4. Repair keratinocytes with repair moisturizing to enhance the skin’s protective function and achieve moisturizing purposes. Various vitamins A, C, E, B5, and fruit acids all have the ability to improve keratinocyte function and increase their metabolism, thereby enhancing the skin’s protection.
