Question
Can a three-month-old baby take both Vitamin A&D drops and calcium powder at the same time?
Answer
Rickets, caused by a deficiency of vitamin D leading to abnormal calcium-phosphorus metabolism, has three functions: promoting the absorption of calcium and phosphorus in the small intestine, promoting the reabsorption of phosphorus in the renal tubules, and promoting ossification. Therefore, when treating rickets, it is necessary to supplement both vitamin D and calcium. Simply supplementing calcium without vitamin D, even with an adequate intake of calcium, cannot promote the deposition of calcium salts in the bones. If only vitamin D is supplemented without calcium, it may lead to a decrease in blood calcium levels, triggering systemic convulsions, tetany of the hands and feet, and laryngospasm. Therefore, when treating rickets, both vitamin D and calcium supplements should be used simultaneously.
