Question

Why would a child still exhibit symptoms of cerebral palsy at a certain age?

Answer

Cerebral palsy is commonly characterized by abnormal posture and delayed motor development. Although the brain damage or brain development abnormalities are non-progressive in the child, their clinical manifestations often change as the brain heals and develops. For instance, severe neonatal ischemic hypoxic encephalopathy may present with hypotonia in early infancy, gradually transitioning to hypertonia and balance disorders. This is something that may only become apparent as the child develops to the point of sitting or even standing.
