Question

What symptoms should make you suspect your child might have type 1 diabetes?

Answer

The typical symptoms of type 1 diabetes include increased urination, thirst, hunger, and weight loss, collectively referred to as the “three pluses and one minus” symptoms. When these symptoms appear, further medical evaluation may be necessary to determine if diabetes is present. In addition, diabetes patients may also experience blurred vision, swelling, generalized itching, numbness and pain in the extremities, constipation or diarrhea, and in more severe cases, acute complications such as coma or delirium.
