Question

If you suspect you have diabetes, what tests do you need to take?

Answer

It is recommended that you go to the hospital for a fasting blood sugar test and a glucose tolerance test to confirm the diagnosis. The diagnostic criteria for diabetes are as follows:

  1. The presence of typical diabetes symptoms with random plasma glucose concentration greater than or equal to 11.1 mmol/L.
  2. Fasting plasma glucose concentration greater than or equal to 7.0 mmol/L.
  3. Post-meal two-hour plasma glucose concentration greater than or equal to 11.1 mmol/L. If any of these criteria are met, diabetes can be diagnosed.
