Question

A two-year-old child has developed white spots on their fingers and the back of their hands, and it has been diagnosed as vitiligo. The child’s family inquires about treatment options.

Answer

Vitiligo treatment presents challenges, with a long course of illness and a low chance of cure. Despite the variety of treatment methods and medications available, there is still no effective drug. Treatment goals include: regenerating the ability of abnormal melanocytes to produce melanin, stimulating melanocyte production, promoting development and regeneration to increase melanin; inhibiting the progression of the disease, preventing further expansion of skin lesions; and lightening the pigmented areas around the lesions, blurring the edges to reduce visibility. Currently, a combination of traditional Chinese and Western medicine, as well as regional and holistic treatment methods, are advocated. It is recommended that patients undergo detailed examinations and receive symptomatic treatment to achieve the expected therapeutic effects.
