Question
Why do newborns get epilepsy? What are the factors that can trigger epileptic seizures?
Answer
Conditions such as congenital hydrocephalus may lead to the appearance of epilepsy symptoms. Newborns, due to genetic factors, have a higher chance of developing epilepsy. Common causes of symptomatic epilepsy during infancy include brain injury during childbirth, edema, hemorrhage, and thrombosis, which can all lead to regional brain sclerosis or cerebral palsy. Additionally, conditions such as incomplete corpus callosum development, incomplete cortical development, congenital cerebral palsy, and chromosomal abnormalities are also causes of epilepsy.
