Question

How can you distinguish between hemangiomas and birthmarks on infants?

Answer

Hemangiomas are common benign tumors in infancy, with about 75% of cases present at birth or shortly thereafter. They typically appear as orange-red or pale red and do not protrude above the skin surface. Light pressure on a hemangioma will fade its color, while crying will deepen it. In contrast, birthmarks do not change color when pressed or when the baby cries. Parents can use these features for identification. If a hemangioma is confirmed, it is recommended to consult a doctor early on about the need for treatment, as not all hemangiomas will disappear on their own.
