Question

What factors or causes contribute to pediatric Wilms tumor?

Answer

Pediatric Wilms tumor has a certain genetic predisposition. Upon discovery of the mass, it is crucial to actively complete the necessary clinical and laboratory examinations within 24 to 48 hours and make a definitive diagnosis. The tumor should be surgically removed within 2 to 3 days of admission. If there are complications with other diseases, the surgery time can be appropriately delayed. For patients with extensive lung metastases that affect lung function, preoperative radiation or chemotherapy should be considered. For large tumors, preoperative chemotherapy and radiation therapy are necessary to shrink the tumor and reduce the risk of tumor cell dissemination during surgery. The timing of surgery should be determined based on the tumor’s sensitivity to radiation and chemotherapy.
