Question

Hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid) is a genetically predisposed disease. If one of the parents has hyperthyroidism, is there a high risk of their child inheriting the disease? Will hyperthyroidism severely affect the child’s healthy growth if they plan to have a child?

Answer

Hyperthyroidism indeed has a certain genetic association. Clinically, many patients with hyperthyroidism come from families with a family history. Although there is a genetic predisposition, not all offspring will develop hyperthyroidism. Genetic factors are just one aspect; other factors such as exposure to hyperthyroidism pathogens, fatigue, or mental stress also play a role in triggering hyperthyroidism. Therefore, even if the parents have hyperthyroidism, their child does not necessarily inherit the disease.
