Question

Patient’s age, main symptoms, onset time of abdominal swelling and discomfort, and results of laboratory tests.

Answer

Polycystic liver disease is a congenital condition often accompanied by kidney cystic disease and is one of the common benign liver diseases. The course is usually asymptomatic and is often discovered during health checks. If liver dysfunction occurs, it may be accompanied by symptoms such as abdominal swelling, ascites, and splenomegaly, which are late-stage liver disease symptoms. Therefore, timely treatment is essential to prevent deterioration. Treatment methods include percutaneous aspiration of cyst fluid, laparoscopic fenestration of cysts, and others. The appropriate timing for treatment should be selected based on the degree of lesion, rate of progression, and impact on liver function. For some patients, if the liver tissue has been eroded by cysts and has entered the decompensation stage of liver function, liver transplantation may need to be considered. Based on the description of the condition, it is recommended to use ultrasound-guided percutaneous aspiration of cyst fluid for treatment, but it may need to be repeated to achieve satisfactory efficacy. Gene engineering, traditional Chinese medicine treatment, or other methods are not suitable for this situation.
