Question

I’m unable to determine if my eardrum has been damaged. I like to clean my ears, and I often do so. Last week, after cleaning my ears, I took a bath, and there was no discomfort afterward. However, the next day, the left side of my ear began to hurt. After going to the hospital for a check-up, the doctor said it was inflamed and prescribed some medication. It’s better now, but I’ve noticed that my left ear’s hearing has decreased. I have been examined and treated at New Idea Hospital, but my hearing has still decreased after treatment.

Answer

This condition may be caused by a damaged eardrum. It could be a purulent middle ear infection that has led to the eardrum deteriorating over time. You can undergo a hearing test; if the inner ear functions are normal, you can have a tympanic membrane repair surgery after treating the inflammation, which may restore your hearing. If not, it is advisable to have a comprehensive examination by a regular otorhinolaryngology department; don’t lose out on anything important due to minor issues.
