Question

A parent inquired about their baby, born on July 15, 2005, who is now five months old and has hardly any hair growth. The parent is concerned that this condition might be due to a lack of certain nutrients and asks whether they should be worried, and if the baby is otherwise healthy.

Answer

Hello! The amount of hair a newborn has can vary from person to person. Some newborns may have thick hair, while others may have sparse hair or even none at all. This is because during the fifth to sixth month of fetal development, lanugo gradually falls out. Infants with sparse hair typically start growing hair around the age of 1, and by the age of 2, their hair will grow to be the same as other children. By the age of 5 to 6, their hair will become as dense and dark as other children’s.
