Question

How can one determine if a neonatal jaundice symptom has begun to fade? My newborn developed jaundice two days after birth and it has slightly diminished after two weeks. However, I’ve noticed that the child’s nostrils and cheeks still have a faint yellow tint, while there is no noticeable jaundice on the palms and soles. How can I self-assess whether this is pathological jaundice?

Answer

To confirm if bilirubin levels have dropped to normal, parents must undergo testing at a hospital. If unable to visit a hospital, they can observe the child’s skin color, including the conjunctiva and the skin on the palms and soles. If the skin color appears generally normal, it usually indicates that bilirubin levels are not exceeding 100 μmol/L.
