Question

My newborn is 15 days old and has recently been experiencing vomiting and sneezing. The saliva in their mouth is also sticky. Could this be a cold? What medications can be used?

Answer

Vomiting is common in newborns and can be caused by underdeveloped sphincter muscles at the junction of the esophagus and stomach, a horizontal stomach position, tight pyloric sphincter, and improper feeding methods. It is recommended to hold the baby while feeding, with their head tilted slightly upward, controlling the flow of milk, and after feeding, patting their back to burp and then gently placing them on their side. Severe vomiting or vomiting of abnormal fluid requires medical attention.
