Question

My baby was born via cesarean section and is now 15 days old. Lately, the baby has been occasionally spitting up saliva from their mouth, and I’m not sure what the cause is. Additionally, can you tell me the normal temperature range for a baby?

Answer

The baby’s situation appears to be mostly a normal physiological phenomenon. This could be due to the underdeveloped central nervous system and salivary glands, resulting in low saliva production. By the time babies are 3 to 4 months old, the salivary glands begin to develop and increase saliva secretion. Moreover, some babies in this age group start teething, which stimulates the oral nerves and further increases saliva production. Since a baby’s mouth is shallow and their swallowing function is not yet fully developed, they are unable to effectively swallow or keep saliva in the mouth, which is why saliva comes out of their mouth. As the baby grows, this situation will naturally decrease. As for temperature, a baby’s normal temperature range is typically between 36.5°C and 37.5°C. If the temperature exceeds 38°C, further medical evaluation may be needed. Please continue to monitor your baby’s health condition and consult a doctor if you have any concerns.
