Question

Why does my 19-month-old daughter frequently unconsciously cry with her eyes?

Answer

Human tears are secreted by the lacrimal glands, with the main lacrimal gland serving as a reflex secretion organ. It increases tear secretion in response to stimuli such as pain, cold, or significant emotional changes. Therefore, when exposed to cold wind, the main lacrimal gland can reflexively become hyperactive. Additionally, upon being stimulated by cold, the skin and muscles around the face and orbit contract, compressing the tear ducts. This obstruction forces tears to flow out from the corners of the eyes, leading to a cascade of tears.
