Question

A five-month-old baby, who has been breastfed, unfortunately contracted viral gastroenteritis and transmitted it to the caregiver. What medication should be used for treatment? Do we need to stop breastfeeding?

Answer

Viral gastroenteritis is an intestinal infection caused by a virus, with common pathogens including rotavirus. For treatment, there is currently no specific antiviral drug available, and the main approach is symptomatic and supportive therapy, such as replenishing fluids and electrolytes. In adults, the main symptoms of rotavirus infection are diarrhea and dehydration. During treatment, it is important to avoid excessive use of antibiotics, as they are ineffective against viruses and may cause dysbiosis. When caring for the patient, attention should be paid to dietary hygiene, providing easily digestible, calcium-rich foods, keeping warm, and reducing the frequency of visits to public places. Viral gastroenteritis is mainly transmitted through the “fecal-oral” route.
