Question
My baby is three months old and has been spitting up milk after feeding recently. The amount of milk spit up is not much, but it happens after every feeding. Is it because we are feeding too much? Can spit-up be harmful to the baby?
Answer
Spitting up is a common symptom in the infant stage. Some babies frequently spit up, sometimes even vomiting all the milk after feeding, leading to a gradual weight loss. This could be a symptom of gastroesophageal reflux. Normally, the lower esophageal sphincter maintains a certain tension, forming a high-pressure zone to prevent the contents of the stomach from refluxing into the esophagus, and the peristalsis of the esophagus can push the refluxed material back into the stomach.
