Question

How Long Does Neonatal Jaundice Last?

Answer

Neonatal jaundice is divided into physiological jaundice and pathological jaundice. For full-term infants, physiological jaundice usually appears 2 to 3 days after birth and resolves spontaneously within 5 to 7 days, with the latest not exceeding 2 weeks. Premature infants’ jaundice may appear 3 to 5 days after birth, reach its peak within 5 to 7 days, and resolve within 7 to 9 days, with the longest duration extending to 4 weeks. A daily serum bilirubin increase of less than 8mg/dL, with serum bilirubin levels of less than 12.9mg/dL for full-term infants and less than 15mg/dL for premature infants, can be considered normal physiological jaundice.
