Question

A baby has been continuously spitting up over the past few days, and it happens like a jet every time they lie down after feeding. It also causes them to cough and cry. Currently, feeding the baby is done in an upright position, and they are not allowed to lie down after feeding. The baby does not have a fever or cough, but is prone to spitting up. What is the reason for a baby spitting up?

Answer

Spitting up in babies is relatively common and is related to the structure of their stomach. Newborns have a horizontal stomach position, small capacity, and a wide opening at the esophageal end (the cardia) that does not close easily; while the pylorus at the small intestine end is relatively tight. If a baby inhales too much air while feeding, milk can easily flow back into the mouth, leading to spitting up.
