Question
My child is 10 years old and has had a fever three times in one month. How should it be treated?
Answer
When a child has a fever, you can take the following physical cooling measures:
- Place a cool, damp towel on the forehead or use a waterproof plastic bag filled with ice wrapped in a dry towel to cool the head and neck.
- Dilute 75% alcohol with water at a ratio of 1:1, and use a small towel dipped in the mixture to wipe the head, neck, armpits, chest, and limbs.
- If after wiping, the skin shows goosebumps, switch to wiping the limbs with lukewarm water slightly cooler than skin temperature until the skin returns to red and warm. While performing physical cooling, you should also administer fever-reducing medication. For children with a history of high fever and convulsions, add calming medication. If your home is far from the hospital and transportation is difficult, it is not recommended to rush directly to the hospital in case of high fever. Instead, perform the aforementioned emergency treatment at home first.
