Question
My child was born with esophageal atresia and has now been found to have a partial inversion of the Y chromosome. May I ask if this child can still live a normal life?
Answer
Inversion of the Y chromosome is generally not a problem but may lead to abnormal embryos and miscarriages. If your last miscarriage was due to a problem with the fetus’s chromosomes, a chorionic villus sampling (CVS) test should have been able to detect any abnormalities in the embryo. I believe that you and your partner can try again to conceive without much worry. The rate of sperm deformity is already high, and your rate of deformity is within the normal range.
