Question

A friend’s child has been diagnosed with adenoid hypertrophy, and I’m not familiar with this condition. Where is the adenoid located?

Answer

The adenoid, also known as the pharyngeal tonsil, is a group of lymphoid tissue similar to (the) palatine tonsil, attached to the posterior wall of the nasopharynx. Adenoid hypertrophy in children is often physiological, reaching its maximum extent at 6 years old and gradually regressing thereafter. It is only referred to as adenoid hypertrophy if it affects the child’s overall health or nearby organs.
