Question
My son’s cough has been ongoing for about half a year, and it recurs even after treatment. He has received hospital treatment, and the doctor diagnosed it as bronchitis, providing medication. However, soon after stopping the medication, the cough returned. I suspect it might be caused by the biscuits and other similar foods I gave him. What should I do in the face of my son’s persistent cough?
Answer
Coughing is a common disease in children, especially during autumn and winter. Generally, it is not recommended to use cough suppressants because they can suppress the cough reflex, leading to mucus (phlegm) in the trachea and bronchi not being able to be expelled, thereby worsening the condition or causing secondary infections. However, if the cough is frequent enough to affect sleep or eating, then cough suppressants can be considered.
