Question

My baby is 12 months old, and I’ve noticed that they seem to have a squint. Is there a problem with this?

Answer

In infants, this phenomenon is typically benign and known as pseudoesotropia. The reasons for this include:

  1. Infants usually focus on near objects, so when looking at close objects, their gaze tends to be more concentrated, with the black eyes on both sides leaning inward.
  2. The bridge of the nose between the baby’s eyes is wider, and the white part of the eyes on the inner side is covered by the skin on the nose side, making it seem as if the black eyes are positioned on the nasal side of the eye (strabismus).
