Question
How should non-medical personnel properly care for a student experiencing an epilepsy seizure?
Answer
When a patient is having an epilepsy seizure, the following care measures should be taken:
- Use a tongue depressor wrapped in gauze to protect the patient’s tongue, preventing any injury from biting.
- Allow the patient to lie down naturally to avoid falling and sustaining injuries.
- Keep the patient’s head turned to one side to facilitate the flow of secretions and maintain an open airway.
- Do not forcibly stop the patient’s convulsions to prevent muscle or joint injuries.
- After the seizure, the patient may be unconscious; stay with them or talk to them in a calm tone to help them regain consciousness. If the seizure lasts for more than 20 minutes, or if another seizure occurs before they have regained consciousness, seek immediate medical treatment at a hospital.
