Question

What types of epilepsy do children have? How should they be cared for?

Answer

Hello, pediatric epilepsy is caused by abnormal discharge of neurons in the brain. The types of epilepsy are usually related to the brain area during seizures. For example, if the seizure occurs in the motor area, there may be limb convulsions; in the sensory area, there may be sensory abnormalities; in the visual area, there may be visual disturbances. Seizures can last for a longer duration and typically do not involve loss of consciousness. Severe seizures may cause temporary muscle paralysis. Epileptic seizures may be accompanied by sudden loss of consciousness, temporary cessation of breathing, frothing at the mouth, dilated pupils, eyes rolling up or deviating, and stiffness and clenching of the limbs. Seizures usually last for 1 to 5 minutes, after which there may be confusion or drowsiness, and then consciousness returns a few hours later.
